Psychologists Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham created the Johari Window which is a cognitive psychology tool used to help people understand their relationship with themselves and others. In the exercise the participants pick adjectives to describe themselves as well as others to be organized into each quadrant. The window is made up of four quadrants, Open (traits that self and others perceive), Blind (traits that only others perceive), Hidden (traits that only self perceives), and Unknown (traits that no one sees either due to collective ignorance or wrong context).
The Johari Window helps bridge the gap between perception and reality of how one perceives themselves in relation to others by creating an easy-to-understand visual diagram as well as encouraging open communication between the quadrants. The Johari Window can help relationships between families, friendships, and coworkers by communicating our positive/negative perceptions of others.
