November 13th is the date that celebrates World Kindness Day and was created to improve relationships within communities and schools by encouraging intentional acts of kindness.
The mission: instead of kindness being the exception, we need to make kindness the norm. Making kindness the norm means putting effort into truly appreciating the positive moments we have within our communities as well as reflecting on the behavior of ourselves and others.
Ask yourself: What is your ‘norm’? Where do moments of kindness appear in your day and how frequent are they?
While acts of kindness are simply short passing moments of joy, they become internalized by you, the person you’re interacting with, and the bystanders. A small act of kindness towards someone can be uplifting and inspire others to do the same.
What if we made it a point to go outside of our comfort zone to make someone smile? Instead of doing random acts of kindness we should consider doing intentional acts of kindness by purposely making an effort to improve the people who are around you everyday.
Adopt a moment of kindness into your daily routine. Smile and say hello to someone, give a compliment or share your appreciation, or simply say thank you.
Kindness starts with one. One smile. One compliment. One conversation. Let the one be you.
To celebrate World Kindness Day at my school, I asked for assistance from my vice principal and school psychologist for help in arranging the event. I also reached out to teachers who've left an inspiring, positive impact on me to help me spread the message. As word got around, the support grew. As days passed by, the message of kindness quickly became a school wide effort. I received the most heart-warming emails from many teachers, filled with stories and thank-you's. My mind was blown from how much support I had received. Many of the staff members adopted World Kindness Day into their daily curriculum and took time to discuss kindness with their students. I got the exciting opportunity to give a presentation on World Kindness Day and speak to students about how they can promote kindness within their communities. Our Developing Relations class created a video filled with students who explained what they were doing for World Kindness Day. By the end of the day, I felt a sense of fulfillment... by celebrating World Kindness Day, our school had become a closer and more connected community.
Finally, an adorable, young girl named Iris created an AWESOME shirt to help celebrate!
